Reading Reflection No.2

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The general theme of the book looked at the many factors and events that helped the Wright brothers build character and eventually lead them on their path. They faces countless failures and doubt until they had actually achieved flight, but kept pursuing their goal as well as learning from their goals.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
While reading the book, I connected with the characters because of how they viewed their failures and shortcomings not as a reason to quit their endeavor, but used it as a learning experience. There are things that have happened to me in years past that at the time seemed like the end of the world, but in retrospect, actually had a profound positive impact on me and my journey through life so far.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would design an exercise that would focus about listing out major failures and events that seemed extremely negative. The people partaking would then need to (without prior knowledge of the second step) write why these failures they had listed were positive in the end. The initial portion of the exercise would enable students to vent and write down their shortcomings, but then in the second portion, would have to face what those events actually did to their person in terms of experience or character building.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
One of the biggest surprises that I feel is not common knowledge regarding the Wright brothers and the race for flight, is that there was a competitor who had a much more significant amount of funding over the Wright brothers. The Wright brothers had $1,000 ($30456 in today's money) compared to $70,000 ($2,131,952 in today's money) in private investment to achieve the same goal.

  1. Hi Collin,

I enjoyed reading your reflection on your book. Reading about them on your blog post, it isn't a surprise that they had to face some struggles before they were able to get to where they are at today. I've found that most entrepreneurs are like that. I have alot of appreciation for people like that because once they achieve their goal they have alot of pride in themselves, which is good because they achieved their goal through hard work, not cheating and short cuts.

  2. I love your idea for the exercise, I think that it is not only great for reflection but for really picking out our major strengths. The book you read sounds incredibly interesting and I am definitely considering it for the next reading reflection. I definitely agree that it is awesome what the Wright Brothers were able to accomplish with the disadvantage that they had.
