Growing Your Social Capital

Growing Your Social Capital

  • James Gibson is a close friend of mine who owns Scholly which is a platform aimed at enabling students to take college classes at their community colleges during summer or when at home. I regard him as a domain expert in our industry since he has had major success in California with his product/service. We had first met through a my mentor and he has offered me advice for many troubling times the company has gone through so far.

  • Ethan Fieldman is a colleague that founded Study Edge. We had originally met at a networking event and also at an Education Technology Conference in Orlando. He would be regarded as an expert in our market segment, I selling products to the college market. Ethan and I have talked about entering into college, however, by the basis of our differing products, it forces us to take different strategies of obtaining similar goals.

  • Lindsey Tropf is the CEO of Immersed Games, which is also an EdTec company and a friend who I have talked with many times over my journey so far. She would be regarded as an important supplier to our industry as she supplies many educational games to teachers as a method of involving their students. Lindsey has helped our me organize a team, as well as prepare for our first convention, which was widely successful. Before we both went to convention, we talked over coffee sharing ideas and strategies for obtaining customers.

  1. Collin,
You have clearly put a lot of thought into who can provide intellectual assets to your company. I like that you have already made the effort to establish these connections like going to the convention you attended. I was a little confused about your market expert as Ethan must appeal to college students, whereas it's my understanding of your model that you must appeal to the teaching organizations themselves, not the students. I could have easily misunderstood, however. Nice post.

  2. Collin,

Great post! Your opportunity is really so I am happy I got to read the individuals you placed in the different categories! You made great choices in your category placement as each individual has a specific talent that they can bring to the table. They also have the resources to take your opportunity to the next step to help market.

  3. Hi Collin,

I enjoyed reading your work. I must say, you have an impressive networks of people. I checked out the website, Scholly, who you said your friend, James, owns the business. The business he runs is very interesting and helpful for students like me, so I'm going to use the service and see how it is. Other than that, I believe you may have forgotten to put the reflection at the end. Keep up the good work! I look forward to see how this journey of yours will go!
