Reading Reflection No1

Book Read: How to fail at almost everything and still win big
Author: Scott Adams

One of the biggest things that shocked me while reading this book is that the creator of the comic Dilbert has as many entrepreneurship endeavors as they had done through their lifetime. He had talked about his list of failed ventures, ranging from restaurants to folders with integrated floppy disk holders. One of the most surprising things that he had talked about, is the medical/mental problems he had and how he was able to overcome them. He had a very positive outlook on failure, and believed even if he failed, he learned some sort of skill that could apply later down the line

I had noticed that Adams had a superior work ethic, and even dedicated multiple chapters to this and how dieting and exercising would help as well as mentioning the mindset behind it and how everybody has a limited amount of determination which should be used on impactful things.

I was always confused why the creator of the comic 'Dilbert' would be qualified to write a book about business, innovation and motivation. At the beginning these two things do not seem to mesh easily, but as the book goes on, the reader realizes that many things tie back into each other.

A couple of the questions that I would ask Adams would be more in-depth things regarding motivation. One thing that I am curious to ask him about would be 'is there a way to artifically create motivation' as in is there a 'secret sauce' that would enable a person to become motivated for a certian subject. Another thing I would want to ask Adams would be to what extent he feels learning a skill would be beneficial. In the book he states, that learning a skill can never hurt, and I am curious about how far this statement would be true to him.

  1. Hey Collin,

It's cool to learn about the rise of some entrepreneurs. All of them have faced some type of rejection or bump in the road. I think it is important to simply recognize the failure, learn from it, and win big. Almost like you have to be bad to get better. I liked the motivation question you would ask Adams, motivation is different for everyone and hearing various takes on it would be fascinating.

  2. Hi Collin,

Interesting to hear about his story, failing definitely helps people grow. I'd like to know more about his view on everyone having limited amounts of motivation. So, this "secret sauce" do you mean like a Limitless type of drug? Or do you mean like a special training? That would be great if there was a way to increase motivation as you mentioned.
